Term Glossary

Clef - A musical symbol used to indicate the pitch of written notes on the staff.

Flat – Generally indicated by a symbol similar to a “b”, a flat lowers a note by one half step.

Relative Minor – Refers to the minor scale that is built off of the sixth note (or minor third below the tonic) of a major scale.  For instance, the relative minor scale of the key of “C” major is “A” minor; “A” being the sixth note of the C major scale. So, to build an “A” minor scale, just play the “C” major scale starting and ending on “A”. Easy beans?

Sharp – Generally marked as a “#”, a sharp raises a note by one half step.

Staff - The 5 parallel, horizontal lines on which music is notated.

Triad – A chord consisting of three notes stacked in thirds.
